OUGD603 Plato Cosmetics - Further Development - Collaboration / Research (Brief Three)

Taking on feedback from the crit and the feedback from Dan, I began working on the question mark logo design. Below are some responses. I think the three below are unsuccessful as they are too crowded and don't get across the luxury of the brand.

I then used the feedback and made the logo design less circular. I think this is successful as a logo design, however I would say it doesn't look like the branding for a cosmetic company; it looks very structured like it could be a logo for a car.

I then tried adding rings to the design to represent the islands of Atlantis. I think this is unsuccessful as the logo design looks very off balance and like it is two logo designs stuck together.

I then tried to make the logo design more obvious that it is a letter P. I created a typeface to go along with it. This is unsuccessful; it's too busy and isn't light and friendly like I wanted it to be.

I then worked on the second concept. This is the design I came up with, following the feedback to make the wave more subtle. This is definitely a really successful logo design; I think it gets across the luxury of the brand really well, and it still incorporates the concept.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 16: Planet - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

The word for today is planet. This is quite a simple icon to create as it's quite a visual word, so I know what to illustrate. This is my first attempt; it does look like a planet, however I think the outer ring can be improved.

This was my next attempt. I think this is very successful and it is clear that it is a planet.

I then added colour to show how it could work if it were used.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 15: Wine - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

The word for today is wine. I started by creating the icon below. I think it looks more like a chalice than a wine glass, and it's also too thick to match with the other illustrations that I have created.

I then tried to add a kind of 3D affect. I think this looks even more like a chalice and is therefore unsuccessful, and again it doesn't really fit with any of the other icons that I have created due to the fact the icons I have created are 2D.

I then made the glass taller. This now looks like a wine glass and fits the brief.

I then added colour to show how it would look if it were used.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 14: Bicycle - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

The word for today is bicycle. I think this will be quite a difficult icon to create as bicycles come on lots of different shapes, and I will have to figure out which is the most appropriate for an icon design. Below is the first design I created. I think it's successful in the fact you can tell it's a bicycle, however I think it could definitely be improved as it doesn't look very in scale.

I then tried to make the design look more in-scale. This was unsuccessful; I feel the wheels look too big and there isn't a lot of negative space within the shape so it all looks very squashed together.

I then tried again using equal triangles for the frame of the bicycle. This is definitely a lot more successful, however I think the handle could use some work as it looks very out of proportion.

I then made the seat of the bicycle and the end of the handle line up. This looks a lot more successful as it's an even shape and therefore everything looks a lot more to scale and in proportion.

I then added colour to the design to show it could look if it were used.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 13: Spatula - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

Today's word is spatula. This should be quite a simple icon to design as it's quite an easy shape to recreate. This is the first mock up that I created. It does look like a spatula, however I think I can create a better shape.

This was the next icon I created. I think it's a lot more successful due to the fact that it's very obvious that it's an icon for a spatula. I added a curve to the handle to make it match with the paintroller that I created yesterday.

I then added colour so that it was clear what it could look like if it were used.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 12: Paintroller - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

The word for today is paintroller. The first design I created wasn't very successful due to the fact that the scale was completely wrong; it was really top-heavy.

The next design I tried was a lot more successful, however I thought that it wasn't too clear which end was the paintroller and which end was the handle. For this reason, I carried on experimenting.

This is the final design that I came up with. I added a curve to the handle to make it more obvious that it was the handle and not the paintroller.

I then added colour so that it was clear what it would look like if it were used.

OUGD603 Plato Cosmetics - Feedback - Collaboration / Research (Brief Three)

I showed Dan all of the logo designs and he preferred the last two designs because they were really conceptual and informed by the history of our brand.

From this, I decided to show some graphic designers on my course the two possible outcomes that I can develop further.

Which do you think is most successful?
1. i definitely prefer the second icon
2. I think the concept of the first but the design of the second.
3. I agree with ^, the concept of the first is more memorable but the design of the second is more high end.

How could it be improved?
1. it needs to be more subtle
2. I know it's round for a reason, but i think there are too many circles within the design.
3. I think stick with the second design but make the wave less obvious.

Does it get across the luxury of the subscription products?
1. it does, but i think it could be made more luxurious if it was more subtle
2. Not as of yet, but it could with some more development.
3. I think it does. I bet it will look really cool once the logo is put onto the packaging.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 11: Crown - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

The word for today is clown. This is also a word that can be illustrated really easily, so I am going to try to make my icon different to anything that is already out there. This icon design was really simple - simply using triangles. I think it could definitely use some work as it's very simple, however it irritates me as the traingle in the middle is a different size to the outside triangles.

Before trying a different way, however, I experimented with the base of the crown and extended it. I think this is quite successful, however it could still be improved.

I then tried with all even triangles. This is definitely a step in the wrong direction - it has stopped looking like a crown and looks more like a mountain range.

I then went back to my first idea and experimented further. I added a back to the crown to give the icon a bit of depth. I think this is a lot more successful than all of the other designs; it is clear that it is a crown, however is very different from anything I've seen before.

I then added colour and some detail so I could see what it would look like if it were used.

OUGD603 Plato Cosmetics - Logo Development - Collaboration / Research (Brief Three)

To begin my logo development, I started by creating the outline of the circles of the shape that many believe the city of Atlantis was. I think the left hand design is really effective, however it's very simple and doesn't seem very high end. I then tried to add a P for Plato into the design, which was even less effective as a high end brand.

I then tried to create the circles into a letter P. I think these are quite effective, however they remind me a lot of Pokemon balls and that is definitely not the aesthetic of the company we are going for.

I then tried to create a typeface using circles and lines. This isn't great as it isn't very legible and it looks very playful. I then took away the lines and was left with three circles; I actually quite like this logo design, however the concept is very unclear to those who aren't in the know of the companies story and concept.

I then tried an attempt at going more literal with the name and using an illustration of Plato's face. This is quite effective, however it is too complex for a logo design as it wouldn't rescale very well.

I then thought of a new concept; the concept is that the logo would be a question mark, which is based on the fact that no one knows the location of Atlantis, but it also a rough outline of the letter P for Plato. This is really effective as there is a concept behind the design and it is informed.

I also thought of another concept. As Atlantis is supposed to have sank into the sea, I tried to show this by adding a wave to the word. This would also reiterate that the company sells bath products.

I am going to ask Dan for some feedback and also ask some people on my course to get both an illustrators and some graphic designers opinions.

OUGD603 Icon A Day - Day 10: Record - Self-initiated (Brief Four)

Todays word is record. For this, I decided to keep it very simple as I feel as though it is quite an easy icon to create, however it could easily be made too complex if I add too much detail. This is the first icon I created - this works, however I feel it looks more like a CD than a record.

I then tried again with a reflection. I think this is more successful, however there is definitely still room for improvement.

I then tried again with the first icon design and played around further. This is a lot more successful and definitely looks more like a record than a CD.

I then added colour so that I could see how would work if it were used; I think it's very successful as an icon design.
