The word for today is 'crown'. I think it's a very obvious route just drawing a crown, so for this reason I am going to try to incorporate a crown into the letterforms. My first attempt can be seen below. I actually think that this is incredibly successful; it's still legible and is kept minimal. However, I want to experiment further as this is a very quick response.
I then tried to turn the w into the negative space of the crown. Again, this is quite successful but definitely takes away from the legibility of the word. I'm also not a huge fan of the difference in black, as the letterforms are a lot thinner than the negative space.
I went back to my first idea and experimented with it more. I made the crown shorter so that it was on the same line as the type; I think this is a lot more successful than both the previous responses.
I experimented a little more with this icon and this is what I came up with. I think it's very successful as it makes the crown stand out from the other letterforms, so it is obvious that the word is crown whether you read the text or not. I also think that adding a stroke to the new letterform works really well as it draws the eye to the W and it is obvious that it is an icon and not just a deformed letterform.
